The Making of an American Icon

Grilled, steamed, or boiled, hot dogs have a long history in the United States. This BBQ staple can be traced back to Frankfurt,Germany, where the frankfurter originated its namesake. Similar pork sausages were brought to America by German immigrants in the late 1800s, helping lay the foundation for the hot dogs we know today.

The exact origin of the American hot dog is still debated. One popular story credits a German immigrant named Feuchtwanger, who reportedly sold hot sausages on the streets of St. Louis, Missouri. According to one version of the tale, customers were given gloves to protect their hands from the heat, but when the gloves weren't returned, Feuchtwanger's wife suggested serving the sausages in buns instead. Other accounts point to New York or Chicago as the true birthplace of the hot dog, making its history as varied as its toppings.

While the details may be up for debate, one thing is certain: the hot dog has become an American classic, earning its place at backyard cookouts, ballparks, and Fourth of July celebrations across the country.

Mustard, Relish, Repeat

As a vegetarian of over 15 years, you might wonder how I ended up writing a Hot Dog Trail for Bentonville. The answer is simple: I’ve always loved the creativity behind a great hot dog. When possible, I’ll swap in a veggie dog; the true magic is in the toppings and combinations, anyway.*

Use this guide to explore the city one bite at a time.

*Don’t worry, I asked the meat-eaters for their opinions, too. 😉
