The wait is finally over—the Walmart Museum is back and better than ever! Reopening in its original home on Bentonville Square, the museum once again stands in the historic Terry Block building, first built in 1888. Every brick was carefully reconstructed, staying true to the space’s history, with stones and materials matching the originals in size, materials, and craftsmanship.
Walmart and the construction crew have been working on this project for years, but visitors to Bentonville might not have realized how large a project it was. The construction crew was careful not to disturb the community on the square, going as far as to erect a crane by assembling and disassembling in the night. They also unloaded dumpsters overnight! The care and commitment to the quality of this project shine in every detail.
Located on the site of Walton’s very first 5 & 10 store, the revamped museum transports you back to 1950 with historically accurate merchandise that you could have bought when the store first opened. As you explore the gift shop, catch a glimpse of the original “5” of the 5 & 10 displayed in this room. Grab yourself a moon pie or a souvenir magnet and head through the double doors to start your experience!
In the first room, you will be greeted by Walmart associates in video form, who tell the story of how they see the Walmart mission exemplified in their work. This video series is intended to be updated as time goes on, so go ahead and come back on your next visit to experience more messages!
Ahead of you is Sam Walton’s office, just as it was left in the 1990’s. Explore the digital touchscreen and gain a deeper understanding of the man who created the world’s largest retailer. This room has over 700 artifacts!
The museum takes you through Walmart's history, showcasing the company's evolution decade by decade. The first floor focuses on the period leading up to the 1990s. Look for unique items like the original hand-drawn layout of Walmart's second store—a design element that influenced store layouts still in use today. Be sure to see Sam Walton's famous red and white Ford F-150, which was meticulously reassembled for display.
As you travel upstairs, take time to look through the old ads pasted on the walls. One of the neatest parts about this display is that those are real associates and their families from a time gone by. See if there are any people you recognize!
On the second floor, the museum transitions to Walmart's story from the 2000s onward, offering an interactive experience. Here, visitors can engage with digital displays to share their thoughts on the future of retail and explore the tribute to the vital role of Walmart's truck drivers. A special display honors Dolly Parton's connection to the company, and Sam Walton's Presidential Medal of Freedom is proudly showcased.
For inclusivity, accessible displays cater to those with visual impairments. The floor also features the Hologram Theater, where Sam Walton himself shares his story, a mural filled with hidden "easter eggs," and a dedicated classroom for student learning and creation.
When you’re ready to head home, no visit is complete without a sweet treat from the Spark Café! Serving up milkshakes, ice cream, and other delicious snacks!
As Sam Walton once said, Walmart is truly "The Lighthouse of the Ozarks." Come see where it all began!
